After a five year break The Highland Schools Girls’ Shinty League returned this year. The league was split into two with each meeting up twice throughout the year, playing in round-robin tournaments.
League A – Kingussie High, Lochaber High A, Lochaber High B, Kinlochleven High, Ardnamurchan High.
League B – Charleston Academy, Dingwall Academy, Plockton High, Portree High, Glenurquhart High.
The winners and runners up from League A were Kingussie and Lochaber A. The winners and runners up from League B were Portree and Glenurquhart.
The finals were held on Thursday 11 June at Lochaber High, where the top two teams from both leagues competed for the cup and the bottom teams competed for the shield. On the day the teams attending were: Kingussie, Lochaber A and Portree for the cup and Lochaber B and Ardnamurchan for the shield.
There were excellent displays of shinty across all the games. In the shield final Ardnamurchan experience showed against Lochaber B with them running out 3-0 winners. The play-offs between Kingussie, Lochaber A and Portree provided some closely run matches.
Kingussie 0-0 Lochaber A
Portree 1-1 Lochaber A
Kingussie 4-2 Portree
This set up a final of Lochaber A vs Kingussie. There wasn’t much between the two teams and both defences proved difficult to break down but Kingussie eventually took a 1-0 lead. Lochaber increased the pressure on the Kingussie defence and came very close to scoring on several occasions but Kingussie managed to double their lead with the final score ending 2-0.
We would like to say a big thank you to all the coaches who helped to organise the event, WCA for the donation of the medals and senior LHS pupils, Iain Macintyre and Donald MacRae, for refereeing.
