Two of our Sixth Year pupils were selected to take part, with 26 other schools from across the UK, in the Mock Council of the European Union at the Grand Locarno suite at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Organised by the British Council with the European Commission and the FCO, this event gives pupils the opportunity to debate two issues currently before the Council of the European Union and to gain an insight into international negotiations and the workings of the decision-making bodies of the European Union. The event also included addresses from the Head of the European Commission Representation in the UK, the Director of Erasmus schemes at the British Council, and Baroness Neville-Rolfe, who encouraged pupils to consider careers in EU institutions.
Sasha MacKinnon and Alistair Macleod, both Advanced Higher French pupils, were selected to represent France, and undertook weeks of research on France's position on the Digital Single Market and the Circular Economy. There followed an invaluable meeting with a European affairs specialist at the French Embassy in London, during which pupils were also invited to sign the condolences book for the victims of the recent Paris attacks.
On the day, Sasha and Alistair made a strong contribution to proceedings, and, working with the professional interpreters, presented partly in French. Many helped the school and the individual pupils along the way; thanks must go in particular to the British Council as chief organisers, and to the French Embassy and Caledonian Sleeper for their generous assistance.
