On 6th October, The Advanced Higher English class accompanied by Drama students went to see the astounding production of “Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett at the Edinburgh Lyceum.
The play was about two men, Vladimir and Estragon, who wait out in the cold every day for Godot. At the end of each day, a messenger boy comes along to tell them that Mr Godot wouldn’t be able to meet them today but he’ll be there the next day. During the play they never get to meet Godot and it becomes apparent that the play is really about the monotony of life and how we’re all waiting for something to happen. While waiting for him they meet the eccentric and unusual character, Pozzo. This character adds in some colour and hilarity needed to lighten the play up.
We were all given the opportunity to watch some professional acting from Bill Patterson and Brian Cox (not the professor) who are well-renowned in Scottish theatre.
The play was thought-provoking in that it made everyone think about where our individual lives are heading and what we’re going to accomplish with our short existence here on the Planet Earth.
