Staff and pupils at Lochaber High School were shocked and saddened by the news of Charles Kennedy’s death on 1 June. Charles was our best known former pupil who maintained strong links with the school, supporting events and visiting regularly to lead political discussions with Modern Studies pupils.
Charles attended Lochaber High School in the 1970s where he won national debating competitions under the tutelage of legendary Principal Teacher of English, Bob Dick, gaining skills which he further honed at University and which helped to make him such a popular figure both locally and nationally.
He spoke regularly at our Burns Supper, most recently delivering the ‘Toast to the Lassies’ with a response from his old school debating adversary, Fiona O’Donnell (Kenny), Labour MP for East Lothian at the time.
We have lost a powerful force for Lochaber and a great ambassador for our school. Charles will be sorely missed by the school and wider community; we extend our sympathies to his family and very many friends.
