A group of pupils and staff has just returned from the ‘trip of a lifetime’ to the Peoples Republic of China. They visited three major centres: Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai where they had the opportunity to see some of the country’s most famous sights.
The first stop was in Beijing to visit Tian ’an Men Square, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Ming Tombs and the Great Wall before moving on to Xi’an by overnight sleeper train. The main attraction in Xi’an was the Terracotta Army with additional visits to the Huaqing Hot Springs, the Wild Goose Pagoda and the opportunity to cycle round the 13 km city walls. Then it was a flight to Shanghai for an evening cruise on the Huangpu River, a trip on the fastest train in the world (Maglev), shopping on Nanjing Road and visits to the Yu Gardens and the Jade Buddha Temple.
As well as visiting iconic, world-famous sights, the group, which was accompanied by national and local guides, took part in a Chinese tea ceremony, went to the theatre to see an acrobatics show and the Tang Dynasty Show (an extravaganza of music and dance), took photos of the ‘Bird’s Nest’ Olympic stadium, sampled the wares in a Chinese supermarket and learned much about Chinese history and culture. By the end of the trip, all were adept at using chopsticks; knew a few Chinese words and phrases and had made memories to last a lifetime.
Parents were kept up-to-date on the group’s progress with a daily blog, which you can read by clicking the link below.
