Playing down the Royal Mile and into Holyrood Park as part of Pipefest was the highlight for many in the 2015 piping season but playing on the Crannog boat, alongside the cruise ship Adonia, was an experience in itself! Given that the band was only asked to play with 24 hours’ notice, members – to their credit - turned out in good numbers.
The pipe band membership has increased this year and we are looking to strengthen the drumming corps further by offering more regular drumming classes with our resident tutor. This year’s High Street parades were very well supported and, due to the generosity of the audiences, we raised more money than in any previous year. The final night always has its own special atmosphere as we bid farewell to senior members. This year we said “goodbye” to two members from the same family. Ewen MacQueen had been playing in the pipe corps for seven years and his brother Iain was a drummer for five years. They each received a certificate and a personalised photo book of their time in the band. Clearly their experience and friendship will be missed by us all. Other awards given out on the final night were to Patrick Turner, S2 for most improved member and Sean MacDonald, S3 for dress and bearing. The band also played a special ‘Highland Cathedral’ for Darren Harkins, who has been listening to the band for the last 17 years and who has helped with the collecting buckets this year.
The band has a few events left to round off the season including the Ben Nevis Race Awards Ceremony and the Loch Ness Marathon. Any pupil interested in finding out about joining the band as a drummer should contact Miss MacMaster for details of the free tuition on offer.
