Young musicians from Lochaber High School once again staged a Concert of Remembrance on 6 November for members of the Commando Veterans’ Association, their families and other guests. The audience was entertained by the school’s Senior Wind Band, Big Band and Lochaber Schools Pipe Band.
Fred Davies, Chairman and National Secretary of the CVA, presented the Vic Ralph Memorial Shield to musicians of the wind band and the pipe band. This year the wind band award was shared by Antony Hook and Ruari Edmond while the pipe band award was won by Emilli Donoghue.
Special guests at this year’s concert were members of the late Stan ‘Scotty’ Scott’s family, including his widow, Pam. Stan was an inspirational member of the CVA who was much respected by pupils and staff at the school. Stan Scott Junior presented a display of his father’s Commando memorabilia which will be given pride of place in the school.
Remembrance Sunday saw the bands performing again, firstly the pipe band at the service in the Parade where a wreath was laid on behalf of the school community by Sixth Years Rachel Melrose and Anne-Marjie Baak. The pipe band was on duty again in the afternoon, leading the parade to the Commando Memorial, Spean Bridge where the Senior Wind Band led the hymn singing. Not only did the bands give outstanding musical performances, they endured appalling weather conditions to show their respect for the inspirational Commandos and other service personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.
All of our pupils had the opportunity to learn more about Remembrance and some local WW1 history in a series of assemblies led by Depute Head and History Teacher, Donald MacLean. Sixth Years sold poppies around the school and Remembrance events were concluded with a two-minute silence at 11.00 am on 11 November.
