Over 300 pupils from 22 schools attended this year’s Lochaber Interschool Rugby Competition. The event, organised by the Lochaber Rugby Club and Active Schools, was sponsored by Sportsafe Uk Ltd who supplied the trophies, two rugby balls and a set of tag belts for the winning team in each category.
Lochaber, Mallaig, Kinlochleven and Ardnamurchan High Schools each entered two teams in the secondary schools’ event.
Lochaber A won against Kinlochleven, drew with Ardnamurchan and lost to Malliag, whilst Lochaber B won their match against Kinlochleven, and lost to Mallaig and Ardnamurchan.
Both teams from Mallaig and both from Ardnamurchan came through the group stages to take their place in the semi-finals, with Mallaig dismissing their opponents to make an all Mallaig final.
This year’s winners in the P4-5 event were Upper Achintore whilst Mallaig Primary took the P6/7 prize and Mallaig High School won the S1/2 event: there will be plenty of rugby kit in the Mallaig area now!
Pauline Donaldson from Lochaber Rugby Club said, “The standard of rugby from all teams that took part today was extremely high, all the schools that took part should be proud of all of their players, well done to all.”
Thanks go to Mr Roberts who took the team on the day, and who holds Thursday lunchtime rugby practices for S1/2. New players, both male and female, are always welcome. Thanks also to Callum and Ryan for refereeing – especially Ryan who had to finish his morning exam before volunteering his services!
