Amnesty International’s “Write for Rights” Campaign
Every year, Amnesty International launch a letter writing campaign that allows individuals to offer support to people around the world whose human rights are being abused.
The S2 elective group “Young Activists” participated in the campaign as their final project of the year and wrote postcards to people all over the world. Some pupils chose to write a message of solidarity directly to an individual who is being discriminated against, such as Ilham Tohti who has been imprisoned by the Chinese government for promoting the rights of Uighurs – members of an ethnic minority who practice Islam. Others have chosen to write appeal letters to politicians such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to halt the building of a dam which would threaten the indigenous people’s way of life in the Peace River Valley. Hopefully they will receive our messages before Christmas!
