What activities are available at Lochaber High?
Duke of Edinburgh
Here at Lochaber High School, we have a long tradition of encouraging our young people to take advantage of the wonderful outdoors, no more so than through our Duke of Edinburgh programme. Every year the DofE inspires hundreds of thousands of young people, from all walks of life, to explore who they are, grow in confidence and develop the skills they need to successfully navigate life. In partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh Award , we wish to empower our young people; to support them as they learn new skills, overcome obstacles, and build confidence and resilience. The life skills that our young people will learn will prepare them for their next steps into the wider world, but most importantly of all, it will make them the best version of themselves.
At Lochaber High School, over 40 S4 pupils have started the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award thanks to the hard work and support from a dedicated team of staff and the commitment of our young people and parents.

Sections
To complete the Award, our young people must complete three sections for an hour a week over a period of up to 12 months, with each section being approved by an external assessor. The three sections that they must complete are Physical, Skills and Volunteering and we have a wonderful range of activities within each one. For the Physical section, activities range from pilates, sailing, walking, running, football, shinty, cycling, uni-cycling, dance, gym work, rugby, swimming, and squash. The Skills that our young people are either starting or improving upon range from baking, cooking, cake decorating, model construction, fly fishing, painting, photography, acting, drama, reading, playing an instrument, care of animals, coaching, and leadership. Volunteering activities within Lochaber High School range from volunteering in various primary schools and the wider community which will eventually amount to over 1,500 volunteering hours. Activities include litter picking, working in a charity shop, reading to the elderly, dog walking for elderly, various charitable activities, supporting a drama club, dance club, and a sports clubs. Pupils are also leading activities within a primary school setting, the Scouts, Sea Cadets, and a Science and Technology club. |
Expeditions
Our young people must also complete a three day Practice Expedition before they set out on a Qualifying Expedition with a DofE assessor tracking their progress. We have a number of local residents with a Mountain Training qualification who are willing to support us with our planned expeditions. The Practice Expedition is planned to take place on the Isle of Arran, whilst the Qualifying Expedition route is likely to be in the Highlands. Expedition dates:
